Kerala is one of the most important tourist destinations in India and the supply of accommodation is vast and varied.
Especially the most popular tourist destinations in Kerala have an extensive range of hotels and resorts in all price ranges. This applies for Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram, the most visited seaside destination, backwaters, and the hill stations in the Western Ghats. Most hotels and resorts in the upper price ranges are located in very scenic surroundings and offer a variety of amenities such as massage and wellness centers, restaurants, swimming pools, and activities for guests such as cooking courses, sightseeing tours and the like.
The standard and service in hotels in Kerala is generally very high and the customer service very friendly and pleasant. Many of the Kerala's hotels attach great importance to the preservation of the environment, and therefore it is customary that brochures, bags etc. are made from recycled paper. Toilet articles found in bathrooms are made of natural products without artificial additives, and many hotels have facilities to recycle water, and in some cases they have waste incinerator or biogas plants to produce energy. Few hotels in Europe and America are equally focused on making things environmentally friendly, and many could learn from the hotels in Kerala.
Kerala is also a preferred holiday destination for Indians. Guests at the hotels are therefore a good mix of international and domestic tourists. It has among other consequences the result that everything becomes more authentic. For example Indian dishes served in hotel restaurants do not become internationalized in terms of taste, and massage and wellness are not adapted to the international tourist, but preserved in its original form, as the case for example is with Ayurveda Massage.
Hotel prices and the occupancy rates are dependent on the season. In the high season from November to March, prices are at their highest, and the occupancy rate greatest. If you travel to Kerala during this period, you must be aware that hotels may be fully booked if you have not made your reservation in good time, especially if the trip goes to the more popular tourist destination; furthermore you must be prepared to pay the highest room rates. In low season, from June to September, it is usually easy to get a room and the prices are a lot lower than in peak season, in return you must be prepared to accept that the weather can be quite bad with a lot of rain. Many Indians prefer to holiday in Kerala during the low season due to lower prices at the hotels.
