India is the birthplace of yoga and meditation, and Kerala is therefore an ideal destination if you want to refresh your mind and body.


Yoga is an integral part of Hinduism and has been practiced in India for several thousand years as a way of freeing the mind, body and spirit. Yoga integrates the exercises of aerobics with gymnastics, and combines the mental and physical through breathing, lungs exercises and inhaling of fresh air into the body to stimulate the individual’s concentration. In recent years, yoga has also become extremely popular in the west, inspiring increasing numbers of people to come and study yoga in India in traditional setting.
 
There are many yoga and meditation centers in Kerala, providing everything from in depth courses to flexible drop-in classes. Yoga has several forms including Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Hatha Yoga. In the West, the term “yoga” is typically associated with Hatha Yoga and its form of exercise. As the style of yoga and the approach to teaching varies at each center, it is important to give proper thought to your needs before applying.
 
In modern times, the traditional knowledge and practice of meditation and a mix of Ayurveda have been taken to a new level with the introduction of scientific research and the subject is taught in various Ayurvedic colleges in Kerala. Used most popular in the rejuvenation therapies of oil massages, herbal baths etc. and yoga exercises. Ayurvedic treatment and Meditation are sometimes considered a better alternative in curing ailments like Jaundice, Paralysis, Arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, Spinal problems, Gastric or Peptic ulcers among other diseases.

Many hotels and resorts in Kerala offer yoga lessons for their guests. Usually, you are offered to participate in groups, but often you can also receive individual tuition if preferred. Furthermore, outside the hotels there are plenty of yoga centers where you can learn about and participate in yoga programs. These centers are usually cheaper than the hotels, but not all centers up to standard, so it would be wise to investigate before you make an appointment.
